Avinage is excited to host classes all about Riesling, one of the greatest grape varieties of the world. The two classes will be presented by Matthew Gaughan, who is a certified wine educator in many fields.
Tuesday, September 22nd - Riesling and Germany
Where else to start with Riesling but Germany? It’s where it comes from; it’s the most planted variety in the country; it helps explain the regional differences in history and the taste of the wine; and aids the understanding of Germany’s baffling wine laws. We’ll taste different styles of Riesling from the various regions: completely dry Riesling, single-site Riesling, off-dry Riesling, and, who knows, maybe even some bubbles. Riesling can be challenging for consumers because of its historic levels of sweetness, but the German wine scene is changing year by year: we’ll explain how!
Tuesday, September 29th - Riesling and the Rest of the World
Riesling has history in plenty of countries and regions across the world: Alsace, Austria, Italy, central and eastern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and here in the US, all of which gives an idea of the global importance of Riesling. We’ll be tasting six wines from some of those regions (can’t do them all!) to explore the history of Riesling around the world and the differences in style, taste, and winemaking.
