Primitivo/Zinfandel

Wine 1:

DeLoach Russian River Valley Zinfandel 2021 - 15% ABV

Region: Russian River Valley AVA, Sonomy County, CA

Larger than the nearby Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a large range of climates and soil types. The Russian River Valley AVA is the result of a break in the coastal mountain range, known as the Petaluma Gap, and this creates a cooler temperatures and foggy vineyard sites as breezes are able to blow in from the Pacific ocean. The grapes for this wine were taken from a rumber of Deloach’s estate vineyards, covering a range of new and old vines, and providing a range of ripeness levels at harvest. After fermentation, the wine was matured in French oak barrels for 21 months prior to bottling.

Wine 2:

Matané Primitivo di Mandura 2021 - 14% ABV

Region: Puglia, Italy

Puglia is an even larger viticultural area, with a hot climate. Primitivo is one of the most commonly grown black varities in the region, along with Negroamaro, and the high temperatures ensure that the grapes are able to fully ripen prior to harvest. The grapes for this wine were harvested from low-density, bush-trained vines which helpts to protect the grapes from overripening and reduce the risk of sunburn damage. After fermentation, the wine was matured in French oak barrels for 4 months prior to bottling.

Zinfandel and Primitivo are genetically the same grape variety, most commonly grown in California and Puglia, Italy respectively. The grape likely traces back to Croatia, where it is known as Tribidrag/Crljenak Kaštelanski. It ripens unevenly, with grape clusters often containing a mix of overripe and underripe berries, resulting in wines that range from bright and brambly to rich and jammy, with aromas and flavors of blackberry, raspberry, black pepper, and baking spice. High sugars in the grapes at harvest results in high alcohol levels after fermentation, and selecting fruit from old vines can add depth and savory complexity in the resulting wine. The long, cooler growing season of the Russian River Valley will offer a more nuanced and tart wine, whereas the hot growing season of Puglia, even with its great diurnal range, offers a jammier expression of the grape variety.

Both wines presented in this blind tasting feature the expected aromas and flavors of blackberry, black plum, raspberry, and licorice, however the Deloach Zinfandel has significantly more pronounced aromas and flavors of vanilla, cloves, and cedar due to the extended maturation in French oak. Despite Puglia’s warmer climate, the Matané has a lower alcohol level due to the age and yield of the vines, and the grapes were harvested earlier in the year, resulting in green and herbaceous aromas and flavors and higher levels of acidity.
