About Level 2:

If you know the basics about Sake—that it’s served both warm and cold, and that it’s made from steamed rice, water, yeast, and koji—then begin at Level 2. This beginner to intermediate sake course offers greater breadth and depth of material and more tasting opportunities as compared to Level 1. It’s for anyone who:

• Works in sake or who want a career in the industry
• Has a serious interest in deepening their sake knowledge
• Wishes to become a more confident sake taster

This qualification is intended for beginners wishing to learn about a wide range of sake. You’ll gain knowledge of the principal rice varieties used in the production of sake, how it’s grown and processed, and the styles of sake they produce. Through a combination of tasting and theory, you’ll explore the factors that impact style and quality and learn how to describe these sake with confidence.

The course prepares the student for the Level 2 Sake qualification and they are guided by our WSET Sake educator. The two live online meetings are structured so that the students can engage with the material and ask any questions they may have, however students can also contact the educator any time for the duration of the scheduled course, should they have any additional questions. Each module on the online learning platform includes a series of independent activities to help students understand sake production and different styles of sake.

Students are advised to taste a range of sakes during their studies. All the required sakes for the course can be found the Specification. In addition, the student will be able to review sake tasting with the instructor during the Live Online Meetings.

At the end of the course, you’ll complete a short, multiple-choice exam, and upon passing, will receive a Digital Level 2 WSET certificate.
